There has been plenty of
controversies involving football, and for a sport attracting plenty of
attention and generating plenty of money, it is likely to have its fair
share of controversies as well.
Though some footballers do have
excellent virtues and can be a role model even away from the pitch,
there are many who are involved in affairs and the like, and when they
do get caught, it is embarrassing for the footballer and those around
him as well.
There have been many scandals in football, and
Following Asamaoh Gyan's recent sex scandal, Allsports takes a look at
the top six controversies surrounding the Black Stars captain:
1. Prez Kufour's intervention
Asamoah
Gyan has a reputation in Ghana where he is the guy you love and hate in
equal measure. It would be recalled that in 2008 during the Nations
Cup, a couple of poor performances on the part of Gyan saw him at the
receiving end of verbal abuse including extreme verbal abuse directed at
his mother.
The ex-Sunderlan striker, who did not appreciate the
abuse which was being meted out to him and his mother by fans,
threatened to desert the national team camp. It took the intervention of
the then sitting President John Kuffour to persuade him to continue
with the tournament.
Two years later, Gyan had become an
important player for the team, scoring three important goals as Ghana
reached the grand finale of the Nations Cup (Angola 2010) for the first
time in over a decade.
2. The 2010 heartbreak
Gyan
missed a penalty at the 2006 world cup in Germany against Czech
Republic but that miss was not met with flak since his name was still on
the score sheet while Ghana went ahead to win the match.
However,
in 2010 he move from hero to villain as he missed a crucial penalty
against Uruguay in the quarter finals of the FIFA World Cup hosted in
South Africa, where had he scored, the Black Stars would have made
history as the first African country to reach the semi-finals of the
prestigious tournament.
Eventually, Ghana lost on penalties to Uruguay.
3. Another penalty miss
Gyan’s problems were manifested once again after missing a penalty in the semi-finals stage of the 2012 AFCON against Zambia.
That
led some football fans marching to his parent’s residence to register
their displeasure while Gyan himself became the number one enemy as fans
took him on on radio programmes and social media platforms.
He subsequently took a break from international duties until recently after claiming he was psychologically troubled.
4. Castro's Missing Saga
Just
over a month after Ghana's poor show at the 2014 World Cup, Asamoah
Gyan was once again in the spot light for the wrong reason.
The
Black Stars captain, together with Afrobeats artist Castro, whose real
name is Theophilus Tagoe, were at the Peace Holiday Resort, a beach
resort in Ada, together with some friends, for recreation when an
unfortunate incident occurred.
Castro, went missing, along with friend Janet Bandu, in July.
They
disappeared while using jet skis on holiday with former Sunderland
striker Gyan's family in the Ghanaian coastal town of Ada. Allegations
in Ghana's media suggested the disappearance was suspicious.
Castro and Bandu were last seen heading towards the ocean on a jet ski and were presumed drowned.
5. Daniel Kenu's assault
Following
Castro's disappearance, Graphic's reporter Daniel Kenu wanted
confirmation to allegations that Asamoah Gyan had “sacrificed” his
friend Castro when they went for holidays in Ada.
That
infuriataed Gyan who, at a press briefing organised by the Ghana
Football Association at the Miklin hotel, nearly confronted the
reporter. His elder brother, Baffour Gyan, was said to have picked up
from Asamoah Gyan’s fury and beat up the reporter
Kenu then
pressed assault charges against Baffuor and some macho men who attacked
him at the Baba Yara Sports stadium, over a question he posed to the Al
Ain striker. Mr. Kenu had gone to the Baba Yara stadium to pick his
accreditation for the Ghana -Uganda clash on Saturday when the incident
happened.
In a volte-face, however, Kenu dropped the charges on health grounds.
The
rather dramatic development left many, on social media, imputing
motives, including a possible inducement of Kenu by Gyan and the two
other accused persons.
6. Sex scandal
Asamoah
Gyan had to face a very hard time following allegations that he had
slept with a 22 year old girl, Sarah Kwabla, at her apartment in
February this year, three days after after leading a star-studded
delegation full of Ghanaian football stars, musicians and movie stars
for the 2015 Stars Soccer Fiesta held in Kumasi.
The 22-year-old
university student is also claiming she got pregnant after the
intercourse and is therefore demanding that Asamoah Gyan gets her a
furnished apartment, a housemaid and a monthly stipend of $1,000 for
postnatal care.
Gyan, however, has requested for a paternity test to confirm whether he [Gyan] is indeed the father to the unborn child.
