Ghana’s Highlife superstar, Kwabena Kwabena has taken a swipe at the biggest musical event in the country, Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMAs), insisting that he is not ready to perform on the VGMA platform until there is an introduction of pre-production director.
As a guest panelist on Ghana’s number one celebrity and lifestyle show, Celebrity Fanzone last Saturday on Viasat1, Kwabena Kwabena argued that the poor and disorganized nature of the award scheme is what informed his decision to boycott the awards about three years ago. “The VGMAs are the only time musicians have the opportunity to exhibit their talent and show who they are as musicians.
If people come to sit in the auditorium for close to six hours and we show nothing and all we see is the DJ and music and miming and all sorts of things are not arranged properly and music so poor in terms of sound, then that is not good…” the “ASOR” hit-maker declared. Kwabena Kwabena also expressed his concern about the kind of message the award scheme says about Ghana music to the rest of the world but maintained that he will be ready to be part of the award scheme when things are done right.
“If somebody out there is watching [VGMAs] in the States or UK… This is what Ghana has to offer and we have to do it well. I've had problems with the music production for years and until that it is solved, until I see a music director for the show; who he has everything planned…I cannot be part of the scheme.” “What kind of award is organized like that? You just can’t come to the stage and do what you like,” an obviously exasperated Kwabena Kwabena stated.
