Akon to be honoured with 2016 BET Global Good Award

American singer, rapper, songwriter, businessman, record producer and actor Aliaume Damala Badara Akon Thiam, better known as Akon will be honoured at the 2016 BET Awards scheduled to hold at the Microsoft Theatre this Sunday at 8 p.m. EST only on BET.

The announcement was made by BET International via its Instagram page.


According to BET, Ghetto hit maker will be honoured for his amazing efforts and contributions to the continent of Africa through his “Lighting Africa” initiative”

Akon Lighting Africa is a project started in 2014 by music artist Akon with Samba Bathily and Thione Niang which aims to provide electricity by solar energy in Africa.

The project came about because of Akon’s experience growing up in Kaolack Region, Senegal in a town without electricity.

Akon has through the project aided in providing electricity for over 11 countries.
