Despite the fact 45-year-old Erykah Badu came up during Hip Hop’s golden era, the Dallas native clearly keeps a close ear to the street and has a firm grasp on what the kids are listening to these days.
Ahead of the release of 2 Chainz’s next mixtape, Pretty Girls Like Trap Music, the colorful rapper has been enlisting various extraordinary female artists to craft playlists in his honor and Ms. Badu is up next, following one from Karrueche.
The “trap&b” singer and self-proclaimed “unicorn,” who had plenty of trap notes on her 2015 offering, But You Caint Use My Phone, has curated a playlist for the Georgia kingpin, which includes music from artists such as Lil Yachty, Divine Council, Future, Mike WiLL Made-It, Young Thug, her baby daddy André 3000 (“Decemba” remix), the East Atlanta Santa — Gucci Mane — and of course, 2 Chainz. Badu throws in a couple of her tracks for good measure, including the contagious “Phone Down” and “I’ll Call U Back.” Running over an hour in length, the 24-track mix is a decent cross-section of rap’s current climate that just happens to be thrown together by one of Hip Hop’s most beloved goddesses. Bump it above.
