Church Royalties Not For Praise And Worship Songs – GHAMRO

Rex Omar
The Chairman of the Ghana Music Rights Organisation (GHAMRO), Rex Omar has clarified reports that churches would be made to pay royalties for songs they use.

In an interview with KMJ on Hitz FM, Rex Omar said the statement which was made at their workshop for the media few weeks ago was misconstrued.

“I believed what was said at the workshop was twisted. What we meant was that the organisation was planning to make churches pay royalties for gospel events that are held by the churches,” he said.

Rex Omar further stated that the church will not be made to pay for merely singing songs for the praise and worship sessions.

“We can’t ask churches to pay royalties for songs they sing at church. That will not be right. Because the songs sang at church are not for commercial purposes. It is just like you and your children singing at home. However, when the church holds a music event, they need to pay royalties just like we do to any other event,” he said.

He added that GHAMRO is still preparing to meet the churches and they believe that when the public is well educated on the matter, the collection of royalties from churches for music events they hold will be fruitful.

The Rex Omar-led administration of GHAMRO has declared its resolve to fight piracy and make sure royalties are duly paid to the music right owners.
