Ghanaian
dancehall artiste Stonebwoy and singer Wiyaala were Ghana’s only
winners at the 2015 All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) in Lagos, Nigeria
Sunday night.
The two, from a list of Ghanaian nominees including Sarkodie and Efya, made the country proud when they won their categories at the awards event which held at the Eko Hotel and suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.
Stonebwoy and Wiyaala, in spite of stiff competition, emerged winners of the ‘Best African Reggae, Ragga & Dancehall’ and ‘Video of the Year’ respectively.
This award will be the dancehall artiste’s fourth in 24 hours. Born Livingstone Etse Satekla, Stonebwoy won three awards at the 2015 MTN 4Syte Music Video Awards at the Accra International Conference Centre Saturday.
He was adjudged ‘Best Reggae/Dancehall Video’, ‘Best Directed Video’ and ‘Most Influential Artiste’ at an awards event which had its fair share of flaws and disappointments including late start, poor sound and persistent technical hitches.
Wiyaala is not new to the AFRIMAs. In 2014, Wiyaala, born Noella Wiyaaka, swept two awards at the maiden edition of the awards also held in Lagos, Nigeria.
She received two 23.9-carat gold-plated trophies for ‘The Most Promising Artiste in Africa’ and ‘The Revelation of the African Continent’ awards.
The 2015 AFRIMA awards, put together by the International Committee of All Africa Music Awards, AFRIMA, in partnership with African Union Commission (AUC), awards music excellence on the African continent.
Apart from the two Ghanaians, some of this year’s big winners, who also received 23.9 karat gold-plated trophies, included Tanzania’s Diamond Platnumz and South Africa’s Casper Nyovest.
Diamond bagged Song of the Year and the coveted Artist of the Year awards while Casper Nyovest won the Best Male in South Africa and also the Best Artist in African Hip-Hop.
