The 17th Vodafone Ghana Music Awards was held on
the 7th May 2016 at the conference center in Accra Ghana which saw a
whole lot of celebrities and fans in the auditorium to cheer and support the
events. However many would have left feeling rather disappointed and
unsatisfied by what they witnessed. Some have called 5 hours of unbelievable
stress and jaw dropping mediocrity.
First of all, The stage… described by an observer as a poor
mans electrical shop…wires not well arranged, poor lighting and the background,
that same old dark background….. as if that side of the stage was going through
dumsor.
The stage was soo poor, one was left asking if this was an international
award show or just some campus event. It was that poor. And the feedback, the
horrible feedback coming from the sound systems, aint no surprise most of the
performances on the night were poor.
And what the hell was the brass band doing? We keep calling
for live music with live instruments for such big events but frankly if we cant
get live bands of the highest quality for these shows, then we better leave our
artist to their lip-synching. The band totally sucked.
Usually red carpet events are characterized by fans,
paparazzi and celebrities giving autographs and an interview or two. Not in GH.
Here the red carpet is more of a catwalk where celebrities get to strut their
stuff infront of a select group of media people who probably have a
relationship, of sorts, with someone in the organizing body.
Finding faults with the VGMAs has unfortunately become a
yearly ritual. To the point of boredom for many. But questions have to be
asked. The VGMAs have to be held to very high standards. They have enough
financial clout to organize an event of international standards. We hope we do
not have to write another damning report on the VGMA next year.
