It looks a lot like the troubles engulfing the Ghana Music Rights Organisation (GHAMRO) aren’t going away anytime soon because more are simply popping up.
Internal strife over the leadership of Kojo Antwi lead to Abirekyieba Kofi Sammy threatening to shoot him and commit suicide after – and the bone of contention has been over collection of royalties.
So it seems there is a disconnect between royalties collected and what’s received by the artists, because UK based Gh act Reggie and Bollie are threatening to sue for being cheated out of Ghc 17,000.
According to entertainmentgh.com, GHAMRO collected some royalties on their behalf last year without their knowledge, and it only came to light after they realised one of their songs had been used by Fan Milk Ghana Ltd for an ad.
The song, their first single post X-Factor, ‘New Girl’, was used in an ad for Fandango without their knowledge or even consent. When they discovered the issue they wrote to FanMilk, who told them GHAMRO gave them permission to use the song and had taken Ghc 17,000 in royalties.
The pair are threatening to sue over the issue, the site reports.
But an administrator at GHAMRO, Abraham Adjetey says the organisation has the mandate to collect royalties on behalf of artites, songwriters and producers.
